Car fails to slow for truck making turn, leading to fatal Madera County crash, CHP reports

A 34-year-old Fresno man died late Friday after being ejected from a 2016 Honda when he failed to slow down as a truck was making a left turn, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP officers received a report about 9:15 p.m. of a two-vehicle crash on Avenue 12 and Road 35 in Madera County, a news release stated.

According to the preliminary investigation, authorities said Jesus Gonzalez Cardenas, 53, from Gilroy, was driving a 2017 Ford truck east on Avenue 12, west of Road 35. Cardenas slowed, coming to almost a complete stop, to make a left turn on Road 35, authorities said.

The 34-year-old, whose name had not been released, was going east in the Honda as it approached the truck. He failed to slow down and the left front of the Honda struck the right rear of the truck, authorities said. He was ejected from the Honda in the crash and suffered fatal injuries.

A 29-year-old woman from Fresno who was a passenger in the Honda was taken to Community Regional Medical Center with moderate injuries. Two passengers — an 88-year-old woman and a 56-year-old woman from Gilroy — in the truck went to Saint Agnes Medical Center with minor injuries.

It is still unknown if drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash, according to authorities. The investigation is ongoing.
