A man is dead after breaking up a fight between two other men including the gunman who then crashed into a squad car on the Northwest Side while fleeing the murder scene Friday night.

Meanwhile, at least 12 other people were wounded in pre-dawn shootings citywide.

The incident happened about 9:15 p.m. in the 1600 block of North Cicero Avenue in the North Austin neighborhood when two armed men began arguing over “gang affiliation” in front of a food and liquor store, police said.

That’s when police said 42-year-old Kenny L. Winters stepped in and tried to break it up. When he did, one or two of the fighting men began shooting, hitting Winters.

Winters, who was shot in the back and leg, was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The suspects fled and 25th District police officers, responding to ShotSpotter technology, saw a blue Volkswagen Passat leaving the homicide scene at a “high rate of speed.’'

When officers tried to pull it over, the Volkswagen collided with a Nissan sedan in the 2800 block of North Milwaukee Avenue in the Logan Square neighborhood and then plowed into an unmarked police car that had its lights activated in the 3100 block of North Kedzie Avenue, police said.

The Passat finally stopped and the driver was arrested in the 3200 block of N. Troy Avenue and then taken for observation to Community First Hospital, where he was in fair condition.

Meanwhile, at least one other suspect inside the Passat got away on foot after tossing two guns.

Area 5 detectives were trying to find video footage and police said at least one more suspect who was in the car was being sought.

Homicide and traffic charges were pending for the arrestee.

At least twelve other people were wounded during overnight attacks city-wide, police said.
