Car going wrong way crashes head on into another vehicle and kills driver, SC cops say

One driver was killed and another was seriously injured Sunday night in a head-on crash, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The two-vehicle collision happened at about 9:15 p.m. in Chesterfield County, Cpl. David Jones said Monday.

A woman was driving a 2013 Toyota Avalon in the wrong direction, going north in the southbound lanes of S.C. 151, and hit an oncoming 1998 Honda Accord, according to Jones.

Both drivers were taken to area hospitals, and the Honda driver died at a medical facility in Florence, Jones said.

The Chesterfield County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the Honda driver.

The woman driving the Toyota suffered serious injuries, according to Jones. Further information on her condition was not available.

No other injuries were reported, and it was not made public if either driver was wearing a seat belt.

There was no word if Toyota driver will face any criminal charges, but the collision continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through April 9, at least 242 people have died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least four people have died in Chesterfield County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 14 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
