Car slams into motel on Cypress Gardens Boulevard in Winter Haven, killing a man outside

A Winter Haven man was killed Saturday afternoon when a car struck him before careening into a motel lobby.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office said Standall Brooks, 33, was standing outside the Economy Suites, 1901 Cypress Gardens Boulevard in Winter Haven, just before 4:30 p.m. when a 2018 Ford Focus driven east by Andrew Hensley, 29, of Winter Haven, left the roadway.

The car struck Brooks before crashing into the motel office.

Brooks was found dead by first-responders. Hensley was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and released. The Sheriff's Office said it appears Hensley might have suffered a medical episode before the crash, but the investigation is ongoing.

The crash caused substantial damage to the building, and crews from Polk County Fire Rescue and Winter Haven Fire Department stabilized the structure until it can be repaired.
