Car struck by train in Surprise, driver sustained critical injuries

A car was struck by a train Saturday evening in Surprise, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Department.

At about 5:20 p.m., MCSO said that deputies received a call regarding a collision between a car and a train near the area of west Grand Avenue and west RH Johnson Boulevard.

Witnesses told police that the car tried to go around the arms that were down and was hit by the train in the process.

The driver, an elderly adult man, was extricated from the roof of the vehicle by Arizona Fire and Medical Authority personnel, officials said. Police said the victim was then transported to the hospital with injuries that were possibly life threatening.
