Car Swept to Sea by Surging Floodwater Amid NSW Storms

Dramatic video shot during floods that followed severe storms along coastal New South Wales on February 9 showed a car being swept towards the sea at Stanwell Park by fast-moving floodwater.

“That car is going out to the ocean!” Sara Vale exclaimed as she recorded from her home. A further clip she provided to Storyful showed the car marooned on some rocks by the sea, and covered in debris. No one was inside the car at the time, she said.

According to the Illawarra Mercury the car belonged to a local family, and it was the second one they’d lost in a year to flooding.

The Bureau of Meteorology said “very dangerous slow-moving storms” had developed between Wollongong and Sydney, with intense rainfall and flash flooding.

Emergency services said they had carried out 31 flood rescues across the Illawarra and Greater Sydney regions, the ABC reported. Rainfall totals of up to 177 mm an hour were recorded, the broadcaster said. Credit: Sara Vale via Storyful
