Cara Delevingne Will Be Honored with the Trevor Project’s Hero Award

The nonprofit is honoring her for her commitment to the LGBTQ community.

Cara Delevingne is being honored by the Trevor Project, the national nonprofit dedicated to providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBTQ youth. At this year’s TrevorLive gala at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City on June 17, the model and actress will be presented with the Hero Award, honoring her commitment to the community served by the Trevor Project and to supporting its mission.

Delevingne told Vogue she is thrilled about receiving the award and will continue to use her platform for advocacy that is close to her heart. “I’m humbled and truly speechless by the Trevor Project’s decision to honor me with this year’s Hero Award,” she said. “A hero to me is someone who stands up for what they believe in and helps to make change to benefit those who are underserved or discriminated against. I am aware of the platform I have and take the responsibility of what I choose to lend my voice to seriously. I’ve prided myself on living my own personal truth, as well as working to hear the voices of the wonderful young people I get to be surrounded by, both in real life and through social media.”

Delevingne has not only been an outspoken champion for LGBTQ rights but has used her social platforms and professional career to voice support for a bevy of other issues as well, including the #MeToo movement, climate change, and diversity in Congress. When it comes to the queer community, Delevingne told Vogue that she feels a particular duty to share her own experiences with those in need of guidance. “I strive to acknowledge those who feel like they don’t fit into a box and work very hard to make sure that those who are struggling know that there is someone listening and someone who can help,” she said. “I’m inspired by the Trevor Project’s tireless, lifesaving work to support LGBTQ youth in crisis, and I extremely proud to be a part of such a resilient community.”

The Trevor Project is currently the largest nonprofit organization for LGBTQ youth focused on suicide prevention and crisis intervention. Past honorees of the Hero Award include Ryan Murphy and the cast of Pose, Lena Waithe, Arianna Huffington, and Imagine Dragons singer Dan Reynolds. Presenters and performers for this year’s gala will be announced in the coming weeks. Of Delevingne’s honor, Amit Paley, CEO and executive director of the Trevor Project, said her candid personality has matched the spirit of past recipients. “The Trevor Project hears from young LGBTQ people every day who draw hope and inspiration from their idols—especially when those idols openly share their personal experiences and messages of support like Cara—because it reminds [them] that they are not alone,” he said. “We’re grateful to Cara for using her voice to inspire so many young people in the LGBTQ community.”
