Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion are making music together again. The duo, who collaborated on the New York native’s hit “WAP,” have joined forces on “Bongos.” The song and its stunning music video dropped on Friday.

According to Complex, the rappers went live on YouTube to discuss the new track.

“[‘Bongos’ is] not really like ‘WAP,’ and the theme…of the photo shoot, we wanted to trick y’all,” Cardi told viewers. “Because we actually wanted y’all to think it got like, ‘WAP’ element, but it don’t.”

The “Hot Girl Summer” MC added that “Bongos” has a unique sound that challenges her as a rapper.

“I was so happy when I got the song because it doesn’t sound like anything that’s out right now, and I feel like it definitely challenged me to rap in a different way,” she said. “Cause I never rapped over a beat like this before, and I was like, ‘Oh, OK, she want me to go put my foot in this b***h. OK, I can do that for her. She want me to work for it, OK, here we go.'”

Megan also opened up about working with the mom-of-two and her bottom line when collaborating.

“For me as a person, I don’t really—this space that I’m in mentally, I’m not like fooling with too many people that don’t give me good vibes, good energy,” she told Cardi around 17 minutes into the livestream. “I have literally created boundaries. And Cardi is somebody that I want in my space, in my energy. … She been nothing but real to me. Like, the industry is so f**ked up, but this girl is probably the only girl who have been this consistent and this real, and this—this just great of a person to me.”

It’s unclear whether “Bongos” will make it onto the New Yorker’s highly anticipated new album. But Cardi spill the tea on the new project to Vogue México y Latinoamérica.

“I’m not going to release any more collaborations, I’m going to put out my next solo single,” she told the publication in August.

She added that, at the time, her team was “working on the cover art and ideas for the next record.”

On the other hand, Megan told InStyle that her priority is “healing,” not necessarily a new album. She released her latest project, Traumazine, in August 2022.

The track is a musical departure from “WAP,” calling on Cardi’s Latinx roots with a funky, bongo-defined beat. While Cardi is in her wheelhouse on the track, it’s clear Megan isn’t, though her flow rises to the occasion. The New Yorker is known for her spectacular visuals, and “Bongos” proves her commitment to creating a vibe-filled experience for listeners. It may be the end of the summer, but “Bongos” urges fans to keep that energy throughout the fall.
