The US rapper, 26, was lavished with congratulatory gifts after making history to win Best Rap Album at the Grammy Awards on Sunday night.
Among the gifts was a bunch of flowers which contained a lyric from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers 1996 hit Walls. It read: “You’ve got a heart so big it could crush this town. Tom Petty.”
Cardi B appeared to mistake the quote for a personalised message from Petty and filmed herself thanking the vlate singer.
“Thank you Tom Petty for the flowers,” she said. “The flowers are very big. I want to say thank you so much and for a beautiful note. Motherf***** loves me, bro!”
Fans were quick to point out the gaffe with one joking: “Tom Petty wrote Walls about Cardi B we just didn’t know it then.”
Another wrote: “Did Nicki Minaj do this to sabotage Cardi B? Petty level: Tom Petty.”

Anyone else confused about Cardi B thanking Tom Petty for her flowers on Instagram?
Tom Petty...is dead.— JorienLeigh (@JorienEvans)February 11, 2019
Somebody please tell me Cardi B didn't for real think Tom Petty sent her flowers.— Friends Call Me Jeff (@JTWard831)February 12, 2019
Cardi B is on IG thanking Tom Petty for some flowers and it’s sweet despite the irrefutable truth that the man died over a year ago.— Danielle (@daniellegee)February 11, 2019
The sender remains a mystery.
Petty died in October 2017 from an accidental overdose due to a variety of medications.
Cardi B has since deleted Instagram after launching a furious tirade at those who criticised her Grammy Award win on Sunday night. Many, including Ariana Grande, thought the gong should have gone to the late Mac Miller.
“It’s not my style for people to put other people down, however I’ve been taking a lot of s***,” she said.
“I’m sick of this s***. I work hard for my motherf****** album. I remember last year when everyone was saying Cardi got snubbed but now this year it’s a problem?”
Cardi B, real name Belcalis Almánzar, dedicated her award to her seven-month-old daughter Kulture, who she shares with husband Offset.
