Cardinal Mooney, Booker, Charlotte girls basketball teams get No. 1 seeds in regionals

A dozen area girls basketball teams reached the girls basketball regional tournament.

Three schools received the top seed in their respective region: Cardinal Mooney Catholic High in Class 3A-Region 3, Booker High in 4A-3 and Charlotte in 6A-3.

All three teams reached the Final 4 last year with Cardinal Mooney moving on to the state final for the second straight season.

The Cougars will be at home against eighth-seed Bishop Verot. Also in 3A-3, seventh-seed Bradenton Christian will be on the road at Brooks DeBartolo in Tampa.

The Tornadoes will play host to eighth-seeded Anclote in 4A-3 quarterfinals. Also in 4A-3, fourth-seed Lemon Bay will be home against Gibbs out of St. Petersburg.

The only area team in 6A-3, the Tarpons will roll out the red carpet for Wharton out of Tampa.

Port Charlotte received the second seed in 5A-3 and will be home against seventh-seed Braden River in one of two all-area matchups in the regional quarterfinals. Also in 5A-3, third-seeded Parrish Community will entertain sixth-seeded Sebring.

The other matchup involving two area teams is in 7A-3 where third-seeded Venice will be home against sixth-seeded Sarasota. The teams played in the district final Friday with Venice coming away with a 58-45 victory over the Sailors.

Also in 7A-3, fifth-seeded Riverview will travel to fourth-seeded Durant in Plant City.

Two area teams made it in 2A-3, both on the road. Fifth-seed Saint Stephen’s Episcopal will be at fourth-seed Seacrest Country Day in Naples. Seventh-seeded Sarasota Christian will travel to second-seed St. John Neumann in Naples.

All regional quarterfinals are scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday.

The regional semifinals are Feb. 14 and the regional finals Feb. 17.

The FHSAA Final 4 will be held Feb. 22 to 25 at RP Funding Center in Lakeland.
