Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright teases appearance in Springfield next week

St. Louis Cardinals fan-favorite Adam Wainwright, in his final season, told reporters that the current plan is for him to make a rehab appearance in Springfield on Tuesday.

Nursing a groin injury that has kept him out early in the season, Wainwright said he expects to begin a rehab assignment at Hammons Field when the Cardinals play a 6:35 p.m. game against Midland. Wainwright's appearance is not official as of Friday night.

The 41-year-old right-handed pitcher is in his 18th season with the franchise. He has 195 wins over his career and has finished in the top seven of NL Cy Young Award voting five times. He went 11-12 last season with a 3.71 ERA in 32 starts.

Wainwright is no stranger to Springfield as he has made multiple stops in the Queen City multiple times throughout his career. The avid fan of City Butcher's barbeque last made an appearance in Springfield in 2018 while also making a stop in 2008.

In Oct. 2022, following the retirements of Albert Pujols and Yadier Molina, Wainwright signed a one-year deal with the Cardinals which he said would be his last.

Tuesday would begin the second homestand for the Springfield Cardinals' 2023 season. They play at 12:05 p.m. on Wednesday with 6:35 p.m. games on Thursday and Friday before a 6:05 p.m. game on Saturday before concluding with a 1:35 p.m. game on Sunday.
