Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright to make Springfield appearance Wednesday

The anticipated rehab appearance from Waino will take place on Wednesday.

The Springfield Cardinals announced Monday afternoon that Adam Wainwright is expected to make a rehab start at Hammons Field on Wednesday at 12:05 p.m.

The announcement follows Wainwright telling reporters on Friday that he expected to pitch in Springfield on Tuesday. St. Louis Post-Dispatch Cardinals beat reporter Derrick Goold tweeted on Monday morning that the one-day delay will allow Wainwright to increase his pitch count from his bullpen session.

Wainwright has been nursing a groin injury that has kept him out of the first few weeks of the regular season.

The 41-year-old right-handed pitcher is in his 18th season with the franchise. He has 195 wins over his career and has finished in the top seven of NL Cy Young Award voting five times. He went 11-12 last season with a 3.71 ERA in 32 starts.

Wainwright is no stranger to Springfield as he has made multiple stops in the Queen City multiple times throughout his career. The avid fan of City Butcher's barbeque last made an appearance in Springfield in 2018 while also making a stop in 2008.

In Oct. 2022, following the retirements of Albert Pujols and Yadier Molina, Wainwright signed a one-year deal with the Cardinals which he said would be his last.

Tuesday begins the second homestand for the Springfield Cardinals' 2023 season with a 6:35 p.m. start. The Cardinals also have 6:35 p.m. games on Thursday and Friday before a 6:05 p.m. game on Saturday before concluding with a 1:35 p.m. game on Sunday.
