Cardinals positional needs and review: Quarterbacks

The Arizona Cardinals are in the offseason and are evaluating what to do to improve and address the roster in 2021.

Over the next several days, we will look at each position group, how it did in 2020, who is on the roster moving forward and what the Cardinals need at the position moving forward.

We begin with the quarterbacks.

2020 season

It is clear the Cardinals have their franchise quarterback. Kyler Murray followed up his 2019 Offensive Rookie of the Year campaign with an even better 2020. He was in the MVP conversation early in the season and, while his production dipped near the end of the year, were it not for an injury in the season finale, he would have had more than 4,000 passing yards. He was selected to the Pro Bowl and, even just missing the 4,000-yard mark, he had the sixth-highest passing yard total in franchise history. His 26 touchdown passes were the seventh-most in team history and he added 11 touchdown runs on more than 800 rushing yards, both franchise records for a quarterback. Chris Streveler was the backup all season and appeared in only five games, having to play 28 snaps in the season finale. He had 30 offensive snaps all season, while Brett Hundley, the team's 2019 backup, was inactive all 16 games.

Roster outlook

Murray: Signed through 2022, $9.76 million cap hit in 2021 Streveler: signed through 2022, $780,000 cap hit in 2022 Hundley: Unrestricted free agent

2021 needs

Offseason need: minimal

The Cardinals don't need much at the position. Murray is the guy. It appears that head coach Kliff Kingsbury believes in Streveler. Hundley will likely be allowed to walk. The only thing they need at the position is a third and maybe a fourth quarterback for the offseason to compete with Streveler or to develop. They could add a veteran backup but their cap situation is such that seems unlikely. Expect to see a young quarterback or rookie added.
