Cardinals restructure DT Jordan Phillips’ contract to make room for TE Zach Ertz
With the trade for tight end Zach Ertz, the Arizona Cardinals needed to make some room for his contract. He is due $5.67 million for the rest of the season from the Cardinals, but as of a few days ago, they had less than $3 million in space under the salary cap.
To accommodate Ertz’ contract, the team has restructured defensive tackle Jordan Phillips’ contract, according to ESPN’s Field Yates.
Phillips was due $10 million in salary this season. The Cardinals converted $6,507,222 of that into a bonus he has been paid and they added another two void years to the back end of his contract to lower this year’s cap hit. Per Yates, it frees up more than $5.2 million in cap space, nearly what Ertz is due the rest of the year.
Phillips still receives $10 million in cash this season but now his cap hit goes up in 2022 and again in 2023, after his contract expires.
