Cards get win, 2-0, Lady Cards tie

Sep. 9—SULLIVAN — Washington Catholic Varsity boys soccer team traveled to the Sullivan Golden Arrows and came away with a non-conference win. Washington controlled early in the game. The tempo belonged to Washington as the Cardinals had multiple shots on goal, however it took 16 minutes for them to get on the scoreboard. Reid Burkes stole the ball from a Sullivan player and sent a long ball to Sean Babrick who was able to beat the keeper on the right side. Both teams had more opportunities in the half but the score remained 1-0.

In the second half Washington came out even stronger as WC put a lot of pressure on the Sullivan keeper. Bronson Bryant had a nice play when he chipped a ball over Sullivan's back line to Will Bassler but the keeper was able to gather the ball before Bassler could get a shot. Then with 28 minutes remaining Bassler was able to find Bryant behind the defense who finished it from the left side. Sullivan pushed hard to score in the second half but the Cardinal back line was able to keep them off the scoreboard and preserve the 2-0 win.

"It was not our best game, but it certainly was a good road win for us and that was our objective. Bassler played his best so far this season and brings some needed energy and toughness in our midfield. Our back line was my biggest concern coming into this season, but Burkes, Eli Mullen, Isaac Halter and Brady Hunter have turned out to be the anchor for the Cardinals and play as a unit for us and this may have been their best production so far this season," said WC coach Stacy Bryant.

Lady Arrows 1, WC 1

SULLIVAN — The Washington Catholic girls soccer team played the ranked Sullivan Golden Arrows at Sullivan on Thursday and came away with a 1-1 tie.

The game was controlled by good defense on both sides. WC trailed 1-0 with 1:50 left when senior defender Brynna Hunter found the back of the net for the equalizer. WC plays White River Valley on Tuesday.
