The CMA CGM Marco Polo left Hampton Roads on Monday.

With enough capacity to carry 16,022 containers, the container ship is breaking size records along the East Coast this week. It first stopped in New York on Thursday before sailing down to Virginia.

The Marco Polo, which is the size of 3½ football fields or about five Manhattan city blocks, will next head to Georgia and South Carolina.

Virginia is among a number of ports that are deepening and widening shipping channels to accommodate these bigger container ships.
