Carl Tepper defeated David Glasheen in the Texas House District 84 Republican party primary runoff Tuesday evening.

With final but unofficial results in, Tepper led with about 59 percent, or 4,417 votes, compared to 41 percent for Glasheen.

After early voting returns came in Tuesday, Tepper was feeling optimistic about the election and what's to come.

"It's a festive atmosphere and we're feeling very positive," Tepper told the Avalanche-Journal at his campaign watch party Tuesday night. "Now we're looking into the future to transition the office from the great Rep. John Frullo."

"We're looking to have a smooth transition and represent the voters of Lubbock County and District 84," he added.

Tepper's victory comes after a messy primary and primary runoff campaign, which included a slew of attack ads and even a lawsuit aimed at Tepper by a Glasheen endorser, followed by reciprocating ads from Tepper's camp. Glasheen is a Lubbock attorney who served in the United State Marine Corp while Tepper is a businessman and former Lubbock County Republican Party Chairman who served in the United States Air Force.

"I was shocked when I saw a fellow veteran on the TV saying that I mocked veteran suicide and homelessness," Tepper said. "The idea that I would mock veteran suicide and homelessness was really offensive, and that was the first salvo of what became a really negative campaign."

"I'm really pleased with the campaign that we ran and really honored to have the support of so many people along the way," Glasheen said in an interview with local media Tuesday night. "I care so much about my home and I really want us to have the best possible results from the legal prosses that should serve us. Win or lose, we're not going to stop working, getting more conservative results out of the legislature each year."

During the primary in March, Glasheen received 4,886 votes, or 41.88 percent of the total. Tepper garnered 4,691 votes, or 40.21 percent. Kade Wilcox and Cheryl Little received 12.99 and 4.92 percent of the votes, respectively.
