Carlisle earns baseball-softball sweep vs. Indianola

The Carlisle baseball team improved to 5-3 after a 1-0 win over Indianola on May 30 as Joe Goodhue pitched a no-hitter.

The Wildcats finally scratched a run across in the bottom of the seventh after a Bennett Brueck pitch got away from the catcher, allowing Gavin Pienkowski to score for the win. Goodhue struck out four and walked three.

Indianola was off to a good start early in the season with a 7-3 overall record that included a doubleheader sweep of Ottumwa on May 20, 5-2 and 7-4. The Indians beat Creston 5-2 on May 23 and split a doubleheader with Des Moines East, winning 6-3 and losing 5-4. Brady Blake led the Indians offensively with a .424 average, four home runs and 14 RBIs in the team’s first 10 games.

Carlisle earned the baseball/softball sweep of Indianola as the Wildcat girls won 9-0 on May 30, with the Indians being limited to two hits, both by Mara Bishop. Carlisle freshman Logan Brown pitched the first four innings and Addesyn Abel finished the final three for the win. Isabelle Noring, Lauren McGriff and Laney Schick all recorded two hits, with Schick also driving in two runs.

Carlisle improved to 1-1 after dropping the season opener to Ankeny on May 27, 7-2. The Wildcats finished with just four hits but kept it close and trailed 3-2 after six innings. Ankeny added four more runs in the top of the seventh to secure the win.

Indianola was still looking for its first win on the softball field as the Indians lost 4-3 to Southeast Polk in the opener on May 27. A 3-1 loss to Ballard on May 31 sent the Indians to 0-3. Bishop, a senior catcher, tallied a base hit in each of the first three games as Izzie Benge pitched in all three games.

The Norwalk baseball team was 6-4 overall to start the year and beat Ballard 3-2 in 10 innings on May 31. Tucker Beving earned the win with 3 2/3 innings of relief and went 2-for-5 at the plate. DJ Harris and Ian Fisher also recorded two hits in the win.

Over on the softball field, Addie Downe opened the season with two home runs and four RBIs to help herself earn the win over conference opponent Pella Christian, 9-5, on May 27. Norwalk dropped its next game to ADM, 2-1, in a pitchers' duel won by ADM’s Aliya Yanga. Norwalk’s Zadie Wadle got the loss after six innings, three hits allowed, two walks and 12 strikeouts. Yanga fanned 14 and allowed three hits and three walks.
