Carl’s Jr.’s AI drive-thru arrives in Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — “Welcome to Carl’s Jr. Would you like to try our bacon guacamole angus burger today?”

Fast food chains might have found their solution to paying their workers $20 an hour: A.I. fast food workers. They’re not perfect, either.

Over a year ago, an artificial intelligence robot named Flippy replaced the job of a fry station worker out in Chicago. Here at home, we’re playing catch-up.

“Yeah, it’s pretty much going to be an A.I./Chat GPT system going forward,” said Schawn Dosoto, Shift Leader at Carl’s Jr.

It’s all through a program called Presto Voice. You can find the Carl’s Jr. location implementing the program off of Panama Lane.

However, Carl’s Jr. isn’t the only store implementing the program.

Applebee’s, Chili’s, and Outback have deals with the service. Being that Presto Voice is the leading A.I. drive-thru service, it might not be long until others follow suit.

“It’s interesting,” said Dosoto. “It’s cutting-edge and we’re trying to stay with the times, and it’s just cool to know that Carl’s Jr. is on board.”

Many are wondering what this means for the jobs Presto Voice is replacing, and if we far off from fully-automated fast food restaurants.

“If we can now use the A.I. to make 100% of the orders emotionally intelligent, cognitive and accurate for 100% of orders, that would be transformational,” Krishna Gupta, Chairman and CEO of Presto said.
