Carlsbad dispatch completes certification program

Congratulations to Carlsbad Police Department Dispatch Commander Katey Prell and Dispatch Training Supervisor Micheal Munoz, who recently attended the Association of Public Safety Communication Officials National Conference. Commander Prell received her Registered Public Safety Leadership Certification, following a very extensive leadership program. She is the first in the state to receive this certification.

Her service project was to write and implement a new training program for the division that meets national standards and complete the accreditation process. Prell also serves on a number of state chapters, where she works closely with national organizations to represent New Mexico’s 911 Community. She recently attended a leadership conference in Washington D.C., where she represented New Mexico.

On Aug. 9, Prell and Munoz received an award for their successful APCO P33 Agency Training Program Certification. The Carlsbad Police Department is the 2nd dispatch center in the state to complete this community. Recently, the City passed a resolution recognizing 911 Telecommunicators as first responders in Carlsbad. Congratulations to Prell, Munoz and all of our telecommunicators, who represent an essential part of our first responder effort.

Thank you to Carlsbad’s LifeHouse program for sponsoring Friday’s football game. LifeHouse started a partnership with several local businesses, Little Digger Man, AR Foreman, and Hocker and Sons, who will be making donations to LifeHouse, depending on how the Eddy County War goes. LifeHouse is also providing T-shirts, footballs, rally towels, and fans at the game.

LifeHouse wants to remind everyone that mental health is a part of a healthy life. The organization is a partner with 988, a hotline for everyone struggling with mental health challenges. Anyone having a hard time with anxiety, sadness, loneliness or relationships should call or text 988 to ask for help. Thank you to Phillip Huston, Linda Dodd and everyone with LifeHouse for their support of this important program.

Just a reminder that Carlsbad’s splash pads are usually open through end of September, depending on the weather. Carlsbad has two splash pads, one at the beach and one at the sports complex, and a third is in development. The Carlsbad Beach area is open for swimming throughout the year, but lifeguards are only usually available when the water park is also open. The Carlsbad Water Park is only open on weekends now, due to the restart of school. Finally, the Carlsbad High School natatorium is currently open from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays for public swim.
