Carlsbad eighth-grader Campbell Foster headed to Washington, D.C.

Carlsbad resident Campbell Foster has been nominated by her school to attend the Junior National Young Leaders Conference in Washington D.C. this summer. Foster is an eighth grader at P.R. Leyva. She has been involved in a wide variety of activities at P.R. Leyva, including the National Junior Honor Society.

As a part of a follow-up to her application, Campbell was asked to give an example of someone with leadership traits. She selected her mother, Dr. Joy James-Foster, who is the president of Carlsbad’s Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Committee. Campbell specifically mentioned her mother’s efforts to expand on STEM activities and her passion for education. Joy has worked very hard to expand on the MLK Committee’s scope over the past few years. Joy is also an employee of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant.

Since 1989, the National Student Leadership Conference has invited a select group of outstanding middle school and high school students to participate in its summer session. The program is sponsored by the National Student Leadership Foundation. Congratulations Campbell!

Carlsbad made another list of best places to retire, thanks to all of the beautiful outdoor opportunities nearby.

The publication, “World Atlas” describes Carlsbad as being the top pick when it comes to recreational opportunities, including Sitting Bull Falls, Carlsbad Caverns, Guadalupe Mountains, the Living Desert, and Brantley Lake State Park.

You can read the complete article here: https://www.worldatlas.com/cities/the-best-small-towns-to-retire-in-new-mexico.html. Golf, swimming, community theater and picnicking are also listed as a few of the many reasons why Carlsbad is a great place to retire.

One of Carlsbad’s most highly anticipated businesses is opening its doors soon. HTeaO’s grand opening will be at 11 a.m. March 24 at 1103 S. Canal Street. The new business will feature half price drinks and half price gallons all day. HTeaO is located at 1103 S. Canal St, and the storefront is beautiful. At the grand opening of Carlsbad Miniature Golf, HTeaO gave out 100 free samples in about three minutes, so we know they’ll do well.

Also, don’t forget that a locally owned business, Sips, Sodas & Snacks, has opened its doors at 1095 N. Canal Street. The business is closed Monday, but will be open the rest of the week. The menu includes flavored sodas and drinks, as well as other snacks. We’ve received a lot of good feedback about this location from members of the community.
