Carlsbad makes WalletHub's list of best cities to start a business

Carlsbad scored the highest of any New Mexico community in a recent study by WalletHub looking to find the best small cities in which to start a business. WalletHub looked at a wide variety of variables, including average growth, investor access and labor costs.

Of the 1,334 cities ranked nationally, Carlsbad came in at 137, putting it at roughly the top ten percent mark.

Carlsbad scored especially well in the “business environment” and “business costs” categories, putting our community well ahead of Santa Fe, Roswell, Clovis, Hobbs, Alamogordo, Rio Rancho and Farmington, who were also part of the study.

You can read the study yourself by visiting at https://wallethub.com/edu/best-small-cities-to-start-a-business/20180.

One of Carlsbad’s greatest challenges, in terms of attracting business, is that Census data doesn’t come close to accurately reflecting our population in the area. Data, such as this WalletHub study, as well as testimonials provided by the many successful businesses here, helps make the case that businesses should invest here.

Next week will be another very busy weekend for Carlsbad, especially on April 29. That’s the day we will have the Hall of Fame induction for Gary Forrest at the Carlsbad Museum at 11 a.m. This event is free and open to the public, and we hope you’ll join us.

The Carlsbad Public Library will also be holding a “Touch a Truck” event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 29 at the civic center. Children of all ages are invited to visit, sit in and touch big vehicles, including a dump truck, fire truck, police cruiser and ambulance. No horns will be used from 9-10 a.m., to allow a “quiet time” for families who prefer it. This will be the 2nd “Touch a Truck” event, and we hope you’ll be able to make it. Just remember that this year’s event is at the civic center.

Also on April 29, the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce is hosting its “Brews on the Pecos” Beer Festival. This event will be from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Pecos River Village Conference Center and is being sponsored by AR Foreman. General admission tickets are $25.
