Carlsbad man dies in New Year's Eve rollover car crash near Artesia

A Carlsbad man died in a rollover crash New Year's Eve south of Artesia, New Mexico State Police said.

Matthew S. Fierro, 33, died around 7:19 p.m. Dec. 31 when his Volkswagen car traveled north on U.S. Highway 285, read a news release.

State police said Fierro's car left the roadway for unknown reasons, struck a guardrail and rolled.

He was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the car and died from his injuries.

Fierro was pronounced dead on the scene by the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator, the press release noted.

Alcohol did not appear to be a factor, police said, and seat belts were not properly used.

New Mexico State Police said the crash was still under investigation as of Jan. 3.
