Carlsbad man named to Forbes 30 Under 30

Congratulations to Carlsbad residents David and Jayann Sepich. The Sepich family recently found out that their son in law, Gregory Sepich-Poore, has been named to Forbes Magazine’s “30 Under 30” for Health Care for 2023. Sepich-Poore founded a company called Micronoma that has created early detection of some cancers. Greg and Caraline Sepich both have PhD’s and both are working on finishing medical school. Last year, Caraline, also an outstanding member of the nation’s health care industry, helped our community out by submitting an excellent series of op ed pieces explaining some of the medical sides of COVID-19. We know the entire community is proud of Caraline and Greg for their accomplishments.

On Wednesday, we had the opportunity to attend a very special ribbon cutting at “Thelma’s Wangs and Thangs” which is a restaurant owned by Jimmy and Belia Broughton. They’ve now reopened at an excellent location at 2301 San Jose Boulevard. The restaurant focuses on serving wings, and you can tell by the giant chicken that has been placed outside. There are also burgers, burritos and other great options. It is open every day of the week except for Tuesday.

Running any business is tough, but operating a restaurant is especially hard. Jimmy and Belia make a difference with high quality food and great customer service – two elements that will always give any business a competitive edge. Call Ins are welcome, and Thelma’s can be reached at 575-499-7191. Thank you to everyone who came out to show their support for the ribbon cutting on Wednesday, especially the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors as well as Chef Andrea Armstrong with “Brunch Me Please” who also runs an excellent business in Carlsbad.

Also on Wednesday, we had an opportunity to meet with Dr. Shannon Sasser, who is the state’s Rural and Frontier Equity Ombudsman. That’s a big title, but Sasser’s job is to meet with communities outside of the Albuquerque/Santa Fe area to try to address community needs. The position was created through a bill by Senators Crystal Diamond and Siah Correa Hemphill.

The City of Carlsbad and Eddy County both had a lot to say to Dr. Sasser about making sure that this part of the state receives its fair share of resources. We appreciate the good discussion and hope she will be back soon.
