Carlsbad Police seek warm jackets during annual coat drive

·2 min read

Keeping the less fortunate warm during the winter months in Carlsbad is the driving force for the Carlsbad Police Department’s annual coat drive.

This year’s coat drive began Nov. 15 and will continue until warmer consistent weather returns to Carlsbad in 2022, said Cpl. Tony Baca.

“We leave it up until after winter. Once the weather starts warming up around springtime is when we take it down. It stays up the entire winter,” he said.

Baca said the coat drive, which began nearly 10 years ago, accepts slightly used and new coats. Coats may be dropped off at the Carlsbad Police Department at 602 W. Mermod St.

“They bring them to the police station and they just drop them off. We’ll go through them and put them on the (coat) rack,” he said.

With COVID-19’s presence in the Carlsbad community, Baca said washing used jackets would be helpful.

Those who need a winter coat may stop by the police station and select one without questions.

“We do ask if they are picking up jackets for children to bring the children in so we can make sure the children are getting a jacket that’s going to fit them,” he said.

“We don’t want someone taking a jacket that they think is going to fit the kid and it winds up being too small.”

Baca said patrol officers are instructed to deliver warm coats for residents who cannot stop by the police station.

“We will deliver them on a case by case basis. If somebody needs a jacket and can’t make it down here, we will take it to them,” he said.

He said anyone in Carlsbad who knows of residents in need of a warm coat should contact Carlsbad Police at 575-885-2111.

“Especially in the schools. If school administrators, school counselors or school personnel know of students that need jackets contact us,” Baca said.
