Carlsbad Public Library has a great lineup for you this summer

School’s almost over for the year, and many parents and students have already been expressing curiosity about summer programs here at Carlsbad Public Library. Here’s a quick summary of events to come in May:

May 7: The library is celebrating National Comic book day 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. with events for the whole family. We will have a costume contest, comic book trivia, and a "make your own comic" station. Everyone is welcome for this fun-filled celebration.

May 11: Teen Art will be held 4:30 to 5:30. This month’s project is created a painted glass jar.

May 14 and May 28: ASL learners and signers of all abilities levels are welcome to this practice time from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Meet other ASL learners and practice together to help build your skills. Topic questions will be available in advance for everyone to practice answers ahead of time. Note that this is not a class, just practice time.

May 14: As part of the “Art in the Park” celebrations which will be going on all day in and around Halagueno Arts Park, the library will host Harry Potter Book Day from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., which will include Harry Potter-themed activities, trivia, and snacks. Come dressed as your favorite Harry Potter character to enter our costume contest and have your photo taken!

May 21 and June 4: Dungeons and Dragons 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Answer the call for adventure with your favorite role-playing game. Any experience level is welcome. We are seeking dungeon masters and players alike to play with new friends.

May 26 through June 9: The library will host its annual Scholastic book fair daily during regular library hours. The fair is run as a fundraiser to earn books which are then given away to local students.

May 28: Seeds, Seedlings, and Sprouts Swap, 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Seeds, sprouts, plants, cuttings, and more are welcome in this swap. Come see what fellow growers have to offer, and find new plants to take home and try.

Starting June 1, more library summer activities are scheduled for all ages to enjoy. Highlight these dates on your calendar:

June 1: Música Buena will take place in Halagueno Arts Park 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. Bring the family to hear some great live music, enjoy goodies from food vendors, and visit the special mobile museum exhibit in the Wonders on Wheels RV, which will be visiting Carlsbad from the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs.

June 9: The library’s summer reading program begins at 9:00 a.m. All ages are welcome to sign up and the program runs until July 28th. Children will receive a book bag with reading supplies and a summer calendar, and a book to add to their personal library. On June 9th there will be several fun in-library activities to enjoy that day, such as shopping at the Scholastic book fair, a library scavenger hunt, and a craft to make.

The library’s summer schedule includes programs and performers for all ages to enjoy. Our very first performer, Meghan Casey of Rocky Mountain Puppets, is a special favorite so we are hosting her show, “Dive in and Discover Yourself,” at Walter Gerrells Performing Arts Center. This is to make sure there is plenty of room for everyone who wants to attend. The puppet show is Tuesday, June 14, and starts promptly at 10:00 a.m.

Other summer weekly events will include story times, performers, and educational programs, LEGO Club, Crafternoon, Toddler Time, and Game Day each Wednesday, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Teen art for students entering grades 6th through 12th will meet Tuesday afternoons from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Our prize store will be available during Game Day time, so children can pick out their reading prizes at this time each week. Teen and adult prizes are also available!
