May 21—VERMILLION — Mitchell native Carly Haring is one of the University of South Dakota's 26 track and field entries into NCAA West Preliminary.
The Coyotes have 25 athletes competing, including 14 entries in the men's and women's high jumps and pole vaults, more than any team in the country.
Haring, the Summit League champion, enters the three-day meet in College Station, Texas, tied for 14th in the NCAA West and tied for 24th in the nation. Her personal-best performance of 5 feet, 10 3/4 inches came at the South Dakota Challenge in April. Haring competes at 1 p.m. on May 29.
South Dakota's Zack Anderson is tied for sixth in the nation with a jump of 7 feet, 5 inches and leads a group of four high jumpers that are collectively ranked No. 1 in the nation. The Coyotes also have five men's and four women's pole vaulters competing.
Former Dakota Wesleyan University national champion Kamberlyn Lamer's career ended after winning the Summit League women's heptathlon. Lamer posted a school-record 5,488 points, finished ranked 33rd in the country. The top-24 scores qualify for the national meet.
The East Preliminary is held in Jacksonville, Florida, with the top-12 competitors in each Preliminary advancing to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships June 9-12 in Eugene, Oregon.
