Carmel mayor race: Fred Glynn enters Republican primary after 2019 loss to Brainard

Fred Glynn, a former Hamilton County Councilor, filed last week to run for mayor of Carmel.

Glynn ran unsuccessfully for state representative in 2022 and was defeated by Mayor Jim Brainard in the 2019 primary.

He is the third competitor in the Republican primary for mayor in what is a highly anticipated race to see who succeeds the seven-term Brainard. Republicans and sitting councilors Kevin "Woody" Rider and Sue Finkam announced their campaigns for Carmel’s top job in 2022. Councilman Miles Nelson, a Democrat, is also running for mayor.

A call to Glynn Monday morning was not immediately returned.

Glynn ran last year for House District 32, which covers portions of Fishers, Carmel and northern Indianapolis. He won a close race in the Republican primary in May and lost in the general election to Democrat Victoria Garcia Wilburn.

He served two terms as a Hamilton County councilor, but did not run for reelection last year in order to run for House District 32.

Glynn faces an uphill climb in fundraising, as his political committee Friends of Glynn has just over $58,000 on hand, according to state campaign finance reports.

Rider, who raised about $365,000 in 2022, has just over $506,000 in cash on hand. Finkam has about $41,000 and Nelson, the Democrat, has about $43,000 in cash on hand as of the end of last year.
