Carol Blake Gerrond: A good time was had by all

Deep, deep summer. That’s where we are. Remember that old pop song “Hot! Hot! Hot!”? That’s how it is. And it’s not all bad.

For instance, this is the time to take your folding chair, sunglasses, soft or hard beverage, and settle down for an hour or two of outdoor amusement. That’s what I got to do this past Sunday evening when I went with family to Galva’s summer entertainment series, and loved “Terrance Simien and the Zydeco Experience.” In the past few years, I’ve seen three of the group’s performances. And it is an experience.

Zydeco is described as “uptempo, syncopated, with a strong rhythmic core, and elements of blues, rock and roll, soul, Afro-Caribbean, Cajun, and early Creole music. It’s centered around the accordian (the squeeze-box kind) and the specialized washboard.” Zydeco Experience adds to that bass guitar, keyboard, trumpet, drums, and sax. And of course, vocals.

If this sounds like some little pick-up band that gets together once in awhile just to have fun, beware. Terrance Simien is an eighth generation Creole. In some performances he adds exotic instruments special to Creole culture. The Experience has won two Grammys and is a finely crafted product that’ll knock your socks off. The word that comes to mind is “joyous.”

On to more serious matters, such as AOC’s pretense she was handcuffed by Capitol police when, while protesting for abortion rights, she broke some rule on the Capitol steps. Leave it to AOC to weigh in on a very serious matter with a silly response. She’s also campaigning to get a raise in congressional salaries because $174,00.00 per year “doesn’t go very far in D.C.” Oh, the suffering.

Then we have Dr. Deborah Birx, a “renowned epidemiologist” according to the CDC, writing a book that exposes that she and others, including Dr. Fauci, doctored statistics, made up “facts,” and did other smarmy acts to convince us their actions to curb the co vid epidemic were necessary. This during the Trump administration. From what I’ve heard about the book, she doesn’t accuse Trump of pressuring her to do any of these things, but who knows what she’ll say later?

And why is she telling this? To sell books? To get back at somebody? Fifteen more minutes of fame?

And what about President Biden’s sudden fall from grace with Big Media? But a few months ago BM was idolizing President Biden while still bashing and trashing Donald Trump. Now President Biden is feeling some heat. Even his wife Jill is being mocked for supposedly comparing Latinos to tacos. No surprise here. BM thrives on sensation, real or imagined.

I truly hope the Democratic party can break away from the Wokies that claim to represent it. I’m a firm believer in a strong two-party system, and among my Democrat friends and family members I can’t find anybody who believes in government by the “elite,” the people who believe only a few are smart enough to run their own lives, and therefore rules are meant for “thee, not me.”

This brings me back to The Zydeco Experience. It was so refreshing to enjoy an evening when Dems, Repubs, Wokies—all of us could just relax and have innocent fun. Who knows the political, religious, ethnic make-up of any of the muscians? Who cares? The crowd had a good time, and the muscians seemed happy to bring it. Long live these happenings!

Keep the faith, and—hang on! Your friend, Carol
