Carriage Carries Casket of Rep. John Lewis Over Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama
A horse-drawn carriage carried the casket of American civil rights icon John Lewis across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, for the last time on July 26.
Lewis was a key figure in the civil rights movement and participated in a march across the bridge 55 years earlier. At the anniversary of the march earlier in 2020 the congressman said he thought he “was going to die” when he and other protesters were badly injured by police during the march. Lewis suffered a skull fracture at the hands of white Alabama law enforcement officials during the 1965 protest, which came to be known as “Bloody Sunday.”
Rose petals were spread along the bridge to represent the blood shed during the 1965 protest, reports said.
