Carrington overcomes slow start in 77-54 D5 tourney win over BCN
Feb. 28—JAMESTOWN — The No. 2-seeded Carrington Cardinals called a timeout down 32-17 midway through the second quarter, which kickstarted the Cardinals to get a comfortable 77-54 win over the Barnes County North Bison on Tuesday, Feb. 28, at the Jamestown Civic Center.
The No. 5-seeded Bison (8-12) dominated the first half until the last few minutes. They sprinted out to a 32-17 lead with 2:32 minutes to go in the second quarter, drawing a Cardinals (13-9) timeout. Out of the timeout, the Cardinals' Grady Shipman hit a layup to cut the deficit to 32-23, starting a 10-0 run for the Cardinals to cut the deficit to 32-27 heading into the half.
"When you panic, sometimes you try to regain 15 points in a minute and next thing you know you're down 25," Cardinals head coach Tim Ranum said. "We had to get stops, first of all, that was what was said. Just try to make a run at it and get it manageable at halftime and then make some adjustments and go from there. Fortunately, Grady got a couple big baskets right away and Josh hit one right at the buzzer there to get us within five, going into halftime a lot of momentum there."
The Cardinals were able to keep it going in the second half as they cut the deficit to 32-29 on the first possession of the second half and were able to take the lead at 38-36 on a Josh Bickett jumper with 4:16 to go in the third. In total in the third quarter, the Cardinals outscored the Bison 26-9.
"We weren't taking care of the basketball and then we sat there and passed the basketball around the perimeter, we weren't attacking," Bison head coach Stacy Schaffer said. "On the defensive end, we weren't making the stops that we were making in that first half."
The Cardinals pushed the lead out to its largest point at 75-52 with 2 minutes to go in the game and then a few minutes later, the Cardinals' Hudson Schmitz hit two free throws to push the lead out to 77-52 and give him 1,0001 career points, part of a 28 point performance for the senior.
"It flipped a lot," Schmitz said. "Once Grady got those steals, we went into halftime pretty pumped, and then about three minutes into the third quarter, we started going on a big run and just never looked back from there. It was really good."
The Cardinals now have to wait to see who they will face in the Regional Tournament on March 6.
