Water quality

With the recent discussion about water quality in East Palestine after a train crash, Canal Winchester city officials have released a fact sheet regarding water quality in CW.

  • Drinking water in the City is sourced from groundwater, which undergoes a natural filtration process through clay, gravel, and sand before arriving at CW wells.

  • The municipal wells that store city water are 60-90 feet deep – much deeper than most private wells. In general, the deeper the well, the less likely it is to become contaminated.

  • Water is pumped from the wells to the CW water treatment facility, where it undergoes rigorous treatment and testing to ensure it is safe for consumption and then pumped out to the distribution system.

  • Even after water makes its way through the water mains and service connections, crews from the CW Water Department provide regular testing to tap water in local businesses and residences to confirm the quality is maintained.

  • The Canal Winchester Water Department issues a Drinking Water Consumer Confidence Report, approved by the Ohio EPA, each spring. The report can be viewed at www.canalwinchesterohio.gov.

  • The City maintains and regularly reviews a Source Water Protection Plan to ensure water will be safe and accessible for many years to come. For more information, call 614-837-5623.
