Cars Navigate Flooded Streets in Paris

Heavy rainfall hit Paris, flooding metro stations and streets in the French capital on Tuesday, August 16.

Footage posted to Twitter by user Eugenie Paquereau shows cars attempting to drive through floodwaters near the Quai Henri, in the 4th arrondissement. “The sea in Paris,” Paquereau tweeted.

Weather services reported the level of the River Seine had risen by 35 cm (13.8 inches) due to the heavy rainfall.

Meteo France reported that the equivalent of one month’s worth of rain fell in the space of an hour.

The Paris fire service issued warnings to locals, advising them to stay indoors during the downpour.

Meteo France placed the country on a yellow alert on August 16; the alert remains in place for August 17, with warnings for thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, hail, and strong wind gusts.

The stormy weather follows a recent heat wave where many places in France reached temperatures over 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) for the first time. Credit: Eugenie Paquereau via Storyful
