Will the Colts get a 2nd-round pick from Washington?

How Carson Wentz fares with the Washington Commanders will affect the Indianapolis Colts in the 2023 NFL Draft.

The Colts sent the quarterback and a second-round 2022 NFL Draft pick to Washington in the offseason, getting back 2022 second- and third-round selections and a conditional 2023 pick. So the Commanders received Wentz, defensive tackle Phidarian Mathis and cornerback Christian Holmes. The Colts turned Washington's second-rounder and their own fourth-rounder into receiver Alec Pierce, tackle Bernhard Raimann and tight end Andrew Ogletree.

But there's one more piece to be determined. If Wentz plays 70% of the Commanders' snaps, a 2023 third-round pick becomes a second-rounder. Here's a look at what needs to happen for the pick to become a second-rounder:

Carson Wentz trade terms

Commanders get: Carson Wentz, 2022 second-round pick (No. 47 overall), 2022 seventh-round pick (No. 236)

Colts get: 2022 second-round pick (No. 42), 2022 third-round pick (No. 73), conditional 2023 third-round pick*

*pick will turn into a second-rounder if Wentz plays 70% of snaps in 2022

Carson Wentz will be out several weeks

The Washington Commanders placed Wentz on injured reserve because of a broken finger suffered in Week 6 against the Chicago Bears. That requires him to sit four games, including the Oct. 30 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts.

For the Colts to get a second-round pick in 2023, Wentz would likely have to miss no games beyond that and play every snap when he returns through the rest of the season.

Through Week 6, he played all of the Commanders' 420 offensive snaps, putting him on pace to reach the 70% threshold in the 12th game.

Report: Carson Wentz has fractured finger

NFL Network reported that Wentz suffered a fractured ring finger in Thursday's game against Chicago, though he finished the game. The injury will be re-evaluated to determine how long he'll be out. If he misses 6 games, it's extremely unlikely he'll play in 70% of the Commanders' snaps.
