Carteret athletic fields damaged by Ida to be replaced

CARTERET – The borough has contracted with a Georgia-based company to replace the synthetic turf fields at Civic Center Park that were damaged by the remnants of Hurricane Ida in September.

The Veterans Baseball Field and Mustillo Softball Field, which were installed in 2008 as part of the Civic Center Park's rehabilitation, were both damaged by the storm.

Carteret received 9.5 inches of rain during the storm, which flooded and destroyed the turf and dirt on the fields as well as mulch and planting beds surrounding the fields, officials said.

Work by Shaw Sports Turf is anticipated to be completed this spring once materials for the project arrive, official said, and the work is expected to take about two weeks. The anticipated construction cost for the repairs is $490,848.

Mayor Dan Reiman said that because the damage was the result of a federally declared disaster, the borough is working with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to recoup costs related to the repairs.

“We will always fight tooth and nail with the federal government to get every dime we are entitled to for our residents, borough facilities, and amenities,” Reiman said in a statement. “Hurricane Ida caused extensive flooding damage throughout Carteret so we have worked with FEMA since the day the storm came to make sure we receive our fair share.”
