Carteret man turns himself in after fatal daytime shooting: police

CARTERET – A 29-year-old borough man has been arrested and charged with the daytime shooting near Lincoln Avenue last week that left one man dead and another wounded.

Yhakeem Kornegay turned himself in to police on Sunday and was charged with murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon, Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Carteret Police Chief Dennis McFadden announced.

Kornegay is being held at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center in North Brunswick where he awaits a detention hearing.

Authorities responded around 1:06 p.m. May 18 to the area of Lincoln Avenue following the report of a shooting where arriving officers located two men with gunshot wounds. Both victims were taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for their injuries, according to the prosecutor's office.

News 12 New Jersey reported witnesses hearing at least 13 gunshots. News 12 also obtained a video which showed a man walking up to a black vehicle parked on the street and firing into the driver's side window, striking two people inside the vehicle.

Following the shooting Nathan Hale Elementary School was placed on lockdown as a precaution, borough officials said.

"Malik was only 27 years of age and had 4 beautiful children. Malik was a loving son, devoted father and beloved brother. Tragically gunned down in a senseless act of violence. Please help us support him on his homecoming," the page states.
