Carthage man dies Thursday in rollover crash in Diana

Oct. 13—CARTHAGE — A Carthage man died Thursday after a garbage truck he was operating overturned on Route 3 in the town of Diana.

Shawn R. Cummins, 35, was pronounced dead at Carthage Area Hospital following the 5:11 p.m. accident, according to state police.

Troopers said in a release that a 2004 International garbage truck operated by Cummins was traveling south on Route 3 when he lost control after the rear right tire on the vehicle failed.

The truck crossed into the northbound lane of travel, exited the roadway on the eastern shoulder, and overturned on the driver's side.

A passenger, Ian J. Pierce, 17, of Natural Bridge, suffered back injuries and was taken to Carthage Area Hospital for further evaluation.

State police were assisted by Natural Bridge Fire and Ambulance, along with the Harrisville Fire Department.
