Carver teen who started food pantry at age 7 loses battle with cancer

CARVER – A Carver teenager who started a charity food program with his family has died of acute myeloid leukemia.

Shane McColgan, 16, died Wednesday night surrounded by his loved ones after what he family called "a courageous, 505-day fight."

"Don’t consume yourself with sadness, for his memory will live on forever ... his legacy of helping others will continue to fill our hearts with love and peace as we celebrate the 16 amazing years we had with him on this earth as he waits for us in heaven," his family wrote in a Facebook post.

Shane started working with his family to collect food donations for the holidays when he was just 7 years old. The mission grew into Shane Gives Thanks, a nonprofit that now runs a food pantry in Carver and helps provide food for students in need in Rockland and Carver.
