Ice storm causes semitrailers to get stuck near Cleveland, ND

An ice storm Monday into Tuesday morning, Dec. 25-26, caused

semitrailers to get stuck near Cleveland

on Interstate 94 and other areas in Stutsman County where there are hills. Semitrailers were having trouble getting up a hill on I-94 near Cleveland and wreckers were having difficulty pulling them up the hill.

The area around mile marker 240 on I-94 near Cleveland is typically where some weather-related accidents tend to happen, said Sgt. Evan Savageau with the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

Completion of Green Bison Soy Processing facility top story for 2023

The completion of the Green Bison Soy Processing facility at Spiritwood is the

top news story for Jamestown in 2023

as selected by the news staff of The Jamestown Sun.

Officials celebrated the completion of the Green Bison Soy Processing facility — the state's first dedicated soybean processing plant — in November.

The first load of soybeans was brought to the Green Bison Soy Processing facility on Sept. 18.

Green Bison Soy Processing is a 75%-25% venture between ADM and Marathon Petroleum Corp., respectively. The $350 million soybean processing facility is located in the Spiritwood Energy Park Association industrial park about 10 miles east of Jamestown.

An ice storm Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 25-26,

caused power outages

in Jamestown and the surrounding area.

Otter Tail Power Co.'s crews worked all day Wednesday, Dec. 27, to make repairs to dozens of broken poles and crossarms and restringing power lines, according to the company's website.

About 2,400 homes and businesses remained without electricity

in the Jamestown region Thursday morning, Dec. 28. The ice storm caused outages in the service area of Northern Plains Electric Cooperative and Dakota Valley Electric Cooperative.

The cooperatives called in additional crews to restore services.

Dakota Valley Electric Cooperative had an estimated 500 poles fall from the weight of ice on the lines and poles. Northern Plains Electric Cooperative estimated around 80 poles that fell from the added weight.

Employees of the city of Jamestown have also been busy dealing with

the aftermath of the ice storm

, according to Tyler Michel, public works director.

Michel said city workers have been sanding streets, keeping storm drains open, cleaning branches from the streets and even locating utilities at North Dakota One Call sites.

"If we have time to send people out in the blades, we have been ... ," he said.

Fire destroyed a home

about 15 miles southwest of Jamestown on Thursday, Dec. 28, said Brian Paulson, fire chief of the Jamestown Rural Fire Department.

"It was a total loss ... by the time we got there," he said. "The roof was completely in on the building."

The fire was reported at 9:19 a.m. at 7545 43rd St. SE. Paulson said no one had been staying in the home because there was no power due to the ice storm earlier this week, and the homeowner went to check on the ranch-style residence on Thursday.

"The roof was on fire when the homeowner got home there," Paulson said.
