Casey Swiderski, Sam Schuyler return to Iowa State lineup as Cyclone wrestlers beat Wyoming

AMES — The Wyoming wrestling team will probably want to forget this road trip to Iowa.

On Thursday, the Cowboys lost 33-3 to Northern Iowa at the McLeod Center in Cedar Falls. On Saturday, the Cyclones took their turn and pounded Wyoming 37-7 here at Hilton Coliseum.

Iowa State, ranked No. 5 in InterMat's Division I poll, is now 8-2 overall and 2-0 against Big 12 competition this season while Wyoming drops to 0-4. The Cyclones have also won 13 consecutive Big 12 duals dating to the truncated 2021 season.

Against Wyoming, Iowa State won 8-of-10 matches and scored bonus points in six. David Carr (165), Julien Broderson (174) and Ramazan Attasaouv (133) all recorded pins. Both Yonger Bastida (197) and Sam Schuyler (285) recorded major decisions, and Marcus Coleman (184) added a technical fall.

Iowa State's dominant victory was marked by both the return of two key starters as well as the loss of another.

Both Schuyler and Casey Swiderski returned to the Cyclones' starting lineup on Saturday. Swiderski, who did not compete at the Collegiate Wrestling Duals last month, scored three takedowns in a 7-2 win over Darren Green. Schuyler, who strained his biceps and missed two of the three duals in New Orleans, won 19-8 over Terren Swartz.

Iowa State coach Kevin Dresser also told the Register that Kysen Terukina, a two-time NCAA qualifier at 125 pounds, will have surgery and miss the rest of the 2022-23 season. He injured his shoulder while wrestling at the NWCA All-Star Classic in November. He will be eligible for a medical redshirt after wrestling just four matches this season. He will have three years of eligibility remaining when he returns next season.

Corey Cabanban will be expected to take the starting spot once he returns from his own injury sometime next month. Dresser said in late December that Cabanban tore ligaments in his foot while in New Orleans and will miss up to six weeks. On Saturday, Conor Knopick wrestled at 125 for the Cyclones, but lost 12-4 to Garrett Ricks.

Saturday's dual was the first of two home meets this weekend for Iowa State. The Cyclones host No. 13 Arizona State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
