Cass' Chambers signs to play football at UIndy

May 11—Luke Chambers utilized his size, strength and athleticism to nearly average a double-double and help lead the Lewis Cass boys basketball team to the semi-state championship game in Class 2A this year.

He will use those same attributes at the next level in the sport of football, as he has signed with NCAA Division-II University of Indianapolis.

The 6-foot-5, 230-pound senior will likely play tight end at UIndy, although there's a chance he could play defensive end. He added the Greyhounds only return one tight end from last season and are bringing in three new tight end recruits, with him being one of them.

Chambers was a force on both sides of the ball for the Cass football team, which went 6-4 playing in the Hoosier Conference. The Kings also could have made a tournament run in football if not for a six-turnover game against Lafayette Central Catholic which resulted in a sectional loss in a game that they led late in the third quarter.

"I truly think if we beat LCC you would've had two wing-T teams playing for the sectional championship between us and Rochester," Chambers said. "They've got coach Shaffer over there. We were there when he coached our freshman year so we know him, he knows us. I think that would have been a really good game with a good atmosphere."

Cass and Rochester will now be Three Rivers Conference opponents starting next school year since Cass is moving over from the Hoosier Conference.

Chambers is joining an Indianapolis program that is coming off a 9-2 season and a GLVC championship. The Greyhounds finished ranked No. 13 in Division II and played in the D-II playoffs for the second time in coach Chris Keevers' four years at the helm.

Chambers said he's joining a strong program on the rise. The Greyhounds have been a regular in the D-II playoffs over the last decade, making seven postseason trips in the last nine years.

"They've done a lot of upgrades and they just put up a new health science building, which is what I want to study," Chambers said. "The school is nice. The locker room is nice. They actually put that up when the Giants were in town for the Super Bowl, the NFL built it all and paid for it all.

"I really like the campus. It's not too small, it's not too big. It still has a college feel to it. They have exactly what I want to study. It's a really good package they offered me so I can't really say no."

Chambers said he is getting a full tuition scholarship to play at the school. He is ranked 10th in his senior class at Lewis Cass with a 4.2 GPA and plans to major in occupational therapy at UIndy.
