Cass County residents organize reproductive rights protest for Saturday

Jul. 1—A protest in support of reproductive rights is scheduled outside the Cass County Circuit Court, 200 Court St., Saturday from 1 to 6 p.m.

The Facebook event page called for a peaceful protest and asked those in attendance to wear pink. The event page said people could bring signs and there would also be a limited number of poster boards and sharpies for people to make signs on site.

Lillianne Plummer, one of the protest organizers, said she was more scared than angry at The Supreme Court's recent decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. She believed this was just the tip of the iceberg and worried that the Supreme Court will target same sex marriage and contraception next.

"We are looking to make change and we cannot move forward if we do not all work together," the event page said.

"You can work with people you don't agree with," Plummer said. "This isn't a yes or no issue."

She hoped men who are anti-abortion would come to understand that it was an issue that affects their wives, daughters, sisters and nieces.

"To be a woman or anyone with a uterus — because there are non-binary people and transgender people with uteruses — who have to deal with these attacks on bodily autonomy, it's scary," she said.

As of Friday morning, the event page showed 32 people planning to attend and 44 people who were interested.

"Even if just 10 people show up, 10 voices are louder than one," Plummer said.

Plummer said counter-protesters had a right to be there and have their voices heard as well.

"We still have the right to freedom of speech," she said.

The Supreme Court voted to end Roe v. Wade last Friday, June 24, in a 6-3 decision that gives state's the right to decide the legality of abortion. Some states immediately moved to ban abortion. The Indiana state legislature will take up abortion law in a special session on July 25.
