Cass County starts COVID vaccine rollout for kids ages 5 to 11

Nov. 3—Today, the Cass County Health Department will start giving the Pfizer-BioNtech vaccine for COVID-19 to children from 5 to 11 years old.

However, the children must first register for an appointment and also have a parent present when they receive the vaccine.

"We have plenty of appointments open," said Cass County Health Department Administrator Serenity Alter.

The appointments run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Parents can register their children for an appointment on the internet at ourshot.in.gov or by calling 211, Alter said.

Pfizer-BioNtech is a two-shot vaccine and the only one approved for children.

The FDA extended emergency approval for the Pfizer vaccine for 5- to 11-year-olds on Tuesday.

The Cass County Health Department is also still giving Moderna and Pfizer vaccine boosters to people 65 and older or at high risk, she said. That's also by appointment.

Although the vaccines have been around for a while, the clinic at 1616 Smith St. in Logansport remains busy.

"It's always pretty steady," Alter said.

However, Cass County isn't seeing as many people from other counties as it did in the earlier days of the vaccine. Most counties have testing and vaccination sites, she said.

"We would see some from south Indy, but we don't see that anymore," said Alter.
