Casselton man suffers serious injuries in Interstate 94 rollover

Dec. 24—TAPPEN, N.D. — A Casselton man suffered serious injuries when the minivan he was driving lost control on Interstate 94 and rolled several times on Sunday morning, Dec. 24, the North Dakota Highway Patrol reported.

Donald Bitzan, 33, suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries in the crash, while a woman and several children also in the vehicle were not injured, the Patrol reported Sunday.

According to the Highway Patrol:

Bitzan was driving westbound on I-94, three miles east of Tappen (mile marker 217) about 10:03 a.m., when he lost control on the icy, slush-covered road.

The 2005 Chrysler Town and Country van Bitzan was driving then crossed the median and entered the eastbound lanes, rolling multiple times in the eastbound lanes.

The minivan then came to rest on its roof, blocking the right lane of the eastbound lanes of I-94.

Bitzan was transported to Steele by the Kidder County Ambulance, then flown by Sanford AirMed to Sanford Hospital in Bismarck for treatment of his injuries.

All of the van's passengers were properly restrained and escaped injury: Tanya Bitzan, 32, of Casselton; and 1-, 3- and 9-year-old girls, and 5- and 7-year-old boys, the report said.

Other agencies responding to the crash included Steele Fire and Rescue and Tappen Fire and Rescue.
