Cast your vote for the top Ames-area high school athlete of the week for Oct. 9-15

The Ames football team bounced back from a 60-13 loss to Class 5A No. 2 Dowling Catholic in a big way Friday with a 60-13 victory at Des Moines Lincoln.

Nevada, ranked fifth in 3A, took down No. 2 Humboldt, 16-8, Friday at Nevada to move into first place in 3A District 2. Ballard picked up its first 3A District 2 victory with a 35-19 home win over Algona at Huxley and Gilbert suffered a 28-0 loss at the hands of No. 8 North Polk. Roland-Story wrapped up the regular season with a 28-13 loss at Prairie City-Monroe, Colo-NESCO is headed to the 8-player playoffs following a 78-22 victory over GMG and Collins-Maxwell suffered a 68-14 loss at the hands of Gladbrook-Reinbeck.

In cross country Ames swept the Iowa Alliance Conference North Division championships with both the girls and boys coming out on top last Thursday at Marshalltown. Ballard won the girls Raccoon River Conference title at Adel last Tuesday and Nevada swept the HOIC championships Monday at State Center.

The Collins-Maxwell girls also came in first and the boys second at the Iowa Star Conference meet Thursday at Wartburg College in Waverly.

The 3A No. 10 Nevada volleyball team split four matches at the Waverly-Shell Rock Quadrangular Oct. 11 and closed out an undefeated run through the HOIC with a sweep of Perry Oct. 13. The Cubs finished 7-0 in the conference and finished the regular season at 22-13 overall.

Ames closed out its regular season by going 2-3 at the Iowa Athletic Conference tournament. The Little Cyclones swept Des Moines Lincoln, defeated Fort Dodge in three sets and suffered losses to Ottumwa and Waterloo East in three sets and Des Moines Roosevelt in two in going to 12-19 on the season.

Gilbert swept Chariton in two sets and lost to South Central and Winterset in two sets each at the Winterset Invitational Saturday. Roland-Story downed West Marshall in four sets during HOIC play and went 4-1 at the Woodward-Granger Invitational Saturday, Ballard swept Winterset on senior night in Huxley Oct. 11 and Collins-Maxwell went 2-3 at the Iowa Star Conference tournament Saturday with wins over Meskwaki and Valley Lutheran and losses to Janesville, Riceville and Clarksville.

The Ames girls swimming and diving team got back in the Dan Flannery Pool Oct. 11 and hammered Marshalltown in a dual meet, 138-47.

Dallas Sauser

The Ames quarterback surpassed 500 yards passing for the second time this season during the victory over Lincoln.

Sauser completed 32 of 44 passes for 532 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions.

Jalen Lueth

Lueth was one of two main targets for Sauser during Ames' rout of Lincoln.

Lueth caught nine passes for 180 yards and one touchdown.

DeShawn Long

Long was the other big receiving threat for Ames in the victory over Lincoln.

Long hauled in 10 receptions for 160 yards and one score.

Cason Stevenson

Stevenson had a huge game at running back to help Nevada knock off Humboldt to take sole possession of first place in 3A District 2.

Stevenson ran the ball 27 times for 133 yards and one touchdown.

Eli Rouse

Rouse was huge in the Ballard football team's victory over Algona Friday.

Rouse ran the ball 21 times for 151 yards and two touchdowns and he also threw a 37-yard touchdown pass.

Lande also came up big for Ballard against Algona.

Lande caught four passes for 96 yards and one touchdown. He also intercepted a pass on defense.

Breckin Clatt

Clatt turned in another strong outing for the Colo-NESCO football team in its win over GMG.

Clatt ran the ball 12 times for 143 yards and three touchdowns and caught two passes for 25 yards. He also intercepted a pass on defense.

Marley Turk

Turk won the North Division individual championship in the varsity girls race for Ames at the IAC cross country meet.

Turk completed the 5-kilometer course in 18 minutes, 20.6 seconds to win the race by 15.6 seconds.

Crespi led a tight pack at the front of the boys race for Ames at the IAC meet.

Crespi finished the race in 16:33.3 to take second, coming in just 1.1 seconds behind Mason City's Jess Cornick.

Paityn Noe

Noe continued to prove she's the top female runner in the state by winning the girls race at the RRC cross country meet for Ballard.

Noe clocked in at 17:33.5 to beat Adel-Desoto-Minburn's Geneva Timmerman by 1:17.9 for the decisive victory. Noe is ranked No. 1 in 3A and Timmerman third.

Carter Holland

Holland won the boys race at the HOIC meet to help Nevada bring home the team championship.

Holland turned in a 5k time of 18:02.84 to beat South Hamilton's Landon Grove by 11.5 seconds for the victory.

Claire Truesdell

Truesdell took home the girls individual championship at the HOIC meet.

The Roland-Story sophomore ran a time of 21:13.46 to beat out teammate Lauryn Kilstofte for first.

William Wadsley

Wadsley took second in the boys race at the RRC meet for Gilbert.

Wadsley broke 16 minutes with a time of 15:54.3 to trail only the 15:43.7 by North Polk's Zach Sporaa. Sporaa is ranked third in 3A.

Saylor Horras

Horras won two individual events and helped Ames win two relays during its dual swimming and diving meet victory over Marshalltown.

Horras won the 50-yard freestyle in 25.20 and the 100 freestyle in 55.65. She also helped the Little Cyclones take first in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:43.39 and the 400 freestyle relay with a 3:51.83 effort.

Abby Greder

Greder reached a big milestone for the Gilbert volleyball team during the week.

She surpassed 1,000 digs for her career. Greder piled up 42 digs over four matches during the week for the Tigers.
