Castalia woman, 65, seriously injured when hit by SUV while crossing street

CASTALIA - A 65-year-old woman was seriously injured Tuesday afternoon when she was struck by a vehicle while crossing a street in this Erie County village, according to the Ohio Highway Patrol.

Mary Beltz of Castalia, was walking in a crosswalk on North Washington Street at Main Street at 4:17 p.m. when she was struck by a 2018 GMC Acadia driven by Lindsay Troike, 38, of Vickery, the patrol said in a news release.

Beltz suffered serious injuries and was flown by LifeFlight helicopter to St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo, according to the patrol.

Troike was traveling southbound on North Washington street and turned left onto Main Street as Beltz was walking southbound in the crosswalk, the patrol said.

Troike failed to yield while turning and struck Beltz with her vehicle, according to the news release.

Both Troike and a juvenile in the Acadia's front passenger seat were wearing seatbelts and neither was injured, the patrol said.

According to Sgt. Joe Wentworth, neither alcohol, drug use nor health-related issues are believed to have been a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.

The patrol was assisted at the scene by the Erie County Sheriff's Office, Margaretta Township Fire Department and St. Vincent LifeFlight.
