Where is Castello Brown?

Castello Brown is nestled on a hilltop overlooking the harbor in Portofino, a seaside town in Northern Italy, just south of Genoa. It overlooks the Mediterranean sea and is popular as a vacation destination among Italians, Europeans, and foreigners alike. The castle is surrounded by extensive gardens.

When was it built?

The ancient portion of the castle is thought to have been constructed around 400 AD for use as a Roman fortress. It was expanded in 1557 under the direction of military engineer Giovanni Maria Olgiati and again in 1622. In 1867, the English consul in Genoa purchased the property and enlisted architect Alfredo D'Andrade to modify it for use as a residential villa.

What's notable about Castello Brown?

With a rich history, Castello Brown has a range of interesting architectural features: "In the staircase of the Castle there is a majolica depicting a present, a copy of the Adoration of the Magi attributed to Gagini (15th century)," reads the official website, which also touts a painted, coffered ceiling in the stairwell dating to medieval times, a hall with a significant triptych, and a room with a miniature model of Portofino.

The Dolcevita room, meanwhile, is decorated with "period images of all the illustrious characters who visited Portofino—from Prince Antonio De Curtis known as Totò to Winston Churchill, from Walt Disney to Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy and many others."

Who owns it?

The last private owner of the castle, John Baber, gave up ownership in 1961; since then, it has been overseen by the Municipality of Portofino.

What is it used for?

Castello Brown can be rented out for—you guessed it—weddings, as well as corporate events, retreats, and more. Ready to book your Kardashian-level vacation? Visit the castle website for more information.
