New Castle County's COVID cases fall 11.3%; Delaware cases plummet 10.5%

Delaware reported far fewer coronavirus cases in the week ending Sunday, adding 3,605 new cases. That's down 10.5% from the previous week's tally of 4,029 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.

Delaware ranked fourth among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week coronavirus cases in the United States decreased 11.3% from the week before, with 702,236 cases reported. With 0.29% of the country's population, Delaware had 0.51% of the country's cases in the last week. Across the country, 32 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.

New Castle County reported 2,118 cases and six deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 2,388 cases and three deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 155,898 cases and 1,433 deaths.

Sussex County reported 787 cases and eight deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 840 cases and three deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 64,765 cases and 868 deaths.

Kent County reported 683 cases and three deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 785 cases and two deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 53,304 cases and 655 deaths.

Delaware ranked 16th among states in share of people receiving at least one shot, with 83.2% of its residents at least partially vaccinated. The national rate is 77.7%, a USA TODAY analysis of CDC data shows. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, which are the most used in the United States, require two doses administered a few weeks apart.

In the week ending Wednesday, Delaware reported administering another 10,689 vaccine doses, including 1,288 first doses. In the previous week, the state administered 11,500 vaccine doses, including 1,471 first doses. In all, Delaware reported it has administered 1,818,080 total doses.

Within Delaware, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in New Castle County with 379 cases per 100,000 per week; Kent County with 378; and Sussex County with 336. The Centers for Disease Control says high levels of community transmission begin at 100 cases per 100,000 per week.

Adding the most new cases overall were New Castle County, with 2,118 cases; Sussex County, with 787 cases; and Kent County, with 683.

In Delaware, 17 people were reported dead of COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. In the week before that, eight people were reported dead.

A total of 274,899 people in Delaware have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 2,956 people have died from the disease, Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the United States 83,984,644 people have tested positive and 1,004,733 people have died.

Delaware's COVID-19 hospital admissions rising

Hospitals in 34 states reported more COVID-19 patients than a week earlier, while hospitals in 33 states had more COVID-19 patients in intensive-care beds. Hospitals in 35 states admitted more COVID-19 patients in the latest week than a week prior, the USA TODAY analysis of U.S. Health and Human Services data shows.
