Castlewood native Dorman inducted into NIAAA Hall of Fame

SIOUX FALLS — Castlewood native Jim Dorman is one of eight members who were inducted recently into the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) Hall of Fame.

The induction ceremony was held during the 53rd National Athletic Directors Conference (NADC) in Nashville, Tenn. The NIAAA Hall of Fame was created to honor retired athletic administrators who held exemplary careers in athletic administration both prior to and after the formation of the NIAAA.

Dorman graduated from Castlewood High School in 1970 and earned a bachelor’s degree in 1975 and master’s degree in 2000 from South Dakota State.His educational career began at Hamlin in 1976. He was SDHSCA Cross Country and Track and Field president and a member of the SDHSAA Advisory Committee for both sports. He was athletic director at Hamlin for three years, Madison for five and Sioux Falls Lincoln for 11 years before retiring in 2016. Since then, he has continued to be involved as the executive director of the South Dakota Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (SDIAAA).

On the national scale, Dorman is a member of the National Executive Directors Council (NEDC) and hosted the 2021 Summer Summit in South Dakota. At the NADC, he was a presenter and workshop moderator.

As executive director of the SDIAAA, Dorman has applied for and received two NIAAA outreach grants. He also vied for the CMAA project to have an oral presentation option, which is now a choice for CMAA candidates. At the state level, Dorman designed and maintained the first website for the SDIAAA. He was also the newsletter editor for several years.

Furthermore, he oversaw awards, membership and the annual state conference. He also served on the Track & Field Advisory Committee and the Sportsmanship ad hoc Committee for the South Dakota High School Activities Association (SDHSAA).

In addition, Dorman was region chairman for many sports including boys and girls basketball, gymnastics, track and field, volleyball and wrestling. Since retirement, he has helped local schools by setting up and helping with cross country, wrestling, gymnastics and track and field meets.

Dorman’s honors include the NIAAA State Award of Merit, being inducted into the SDIAAA Hall of Fame, the NIAAA Bruce D. Whitehead Distinguished Service Award and the NFHS Citation. He has been selected as Executive Director of the SDHSCA in 2007, South Dakota AD of the Year in 2012 and 2016 and as a finalist for National Athletic Director of the Year. He also is a member of the National Executive Directors Council.
