Casualty star Kirsty Mitchell has addressed Faith's dark storyline which has seen her drug addiction worsen.

In last night's (August 12) episode, Faith was caught stealing diazepam from the hospital when Stevie found the drug hidden in Faith's locker.

After being caught out by her friend, Faith lied to Stevie, telling her she has ovarian cancer and had been taking diazepam for the pain.

Since airing, Faith's lie has sparked backlash among Casualty fans who remember when Faith's son Luka was battling cancer.

"Let's remember: Faith's son, HER OWN SON, nearly died from cancer. And now she's making it up for sympathy," wrote one fan.

"Wow using cancer as an excuse for Faith’s lies and Stevie just accepts it as a doctor. I don’t like storylines that use cancer when a character doesn’t actually have it (I know it’s fictional). We just lost a friend a few weeks ago to ovarian cancer," wrote another.

Taking time to address the response, Faith actress Kirsty Mitchell took to Twitter to thank fans for remaining supportive of Faith.

"I wanted to take a moment to address the recent storyline on #Casualty involving my character Faith," she penned. "I understand that last night's episode might have touched upon a delicate subject and may have caused concerns among some of you. It's important to remember that the show's creative team aims to spark conversations and shed light on various aspects of life, even when they're uncomfortable.

"Your support of Faith means the world to me. Please know that I'm just as eager as you are to see how her journey unfolds and how she navigates the challenges ahead. Thank you for being such incredible fans."

Despite facing some backlash, fans were quick to respond to the tweet, with many praising Mitchell for her performance, with one fan penning: "You're playing out the storyline brilliantly. Couldn't believe Faith's lie! Can't wait to find out what happens next!"

Casualty airs on Saturdays on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
